PostSubject: Korean Drinking Culture   Fri Feb 08, 2008 2:33 pm

The Koreans see the drinking session as an escape from the formalities of daily life such as rank and social status. When drinking, the Koreans will almost instantaneously become loud, boisterous, and “happy”. Being able to “hold one’s liquor” is not a virtue. Outwardly, their faces will turn red from what is called the “Soju Flush” effect. The cause of this reaction seems to be as much psychological as it is physiological. During these sessions, the Koreans often sing, chide each other, and exchange their most intimate details. It is not uncommon for a station’s captain to go out drinking with his subordinates in order to develop a greater kinship with them. According to a recent survey, 12% of Koreans males get drunk every day and 70% get drunk each week.

The procedure during a drinking party is to fill the glasses of your companions and allow them to fill yours. Once everyone’s glass is full, there is a chorus of “Kombe!” (Korean for cheers) and the drinking begins. Key at the drinking party is to keep the glasses of your companions full. Anyone who has had enough will put their hand over their glass.
